The legacy of a college basketball head coach is defined by the amount of success their program has in March.

A legacy is tied up in how many times a coach can get to the dance, how far a team advances, how many times the program reaches the Final Four and if their team can be the last one standing.

For Texas men’s basketball head coach Sean Miller, whose coaching career spans over two decades and three programs — two separate stints at Xavier, 12 seasons with the Arizona Wildcats and a season with Texas — Miller has accomplished plenty in the sport.

Following his 21st season as a collegiate head coach, Miller has a career 508–211 record, eight regular-season conference titles and four conference tournament championships.

Miller has 14 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, holding a 25–14 record, and has led several teams to deep runs with four trips to the Elite Eight and eight trips to the Sweet 16.

However, reaching the Final Four and the national championship game has eluded Miller for two decades, both of which are major notches on a resume that all the great college coaches have.

On the Inside College Basketball Now podcast in August, CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein asked Miller how obsessed he remains with reaching a Final Four, noting an old interview where Miller said he thought about the Final Four every 10 minutes.

Now with over two decades of experience later, Miller is taking a holistic approach to chasing the two biggest things that could define his legacy as a head coach.

“When you start to reflect on the end, … you’re not paying attention to the details that you do every day,” Miller said. “So if I think about things every 10 minutes, I’m still consumed with the game of basketball. I try to focus more on what it is we’re doing and how we could be better at it. I think that’s a much healthier approach to getting to the end result.”

Miller has come close to a Final Four several times, taking Xavier to the Elite Eight in 2008 during his first stint, and then he found himself a game away from the penultimate round three times during his long tenure at Arizona, with his last trip being in 2015.

Like their head coach, the Longhorns are also searching for another deep run in the NCAA Tournament, as the program has not been to the Final Four since 2003.

In year one, Miller led the Longhorns to the Sweet Sixteen, but they fell one possession short, losing to the Purdue Boilermakers 79-77, which would have sent Texas to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2022-23.

Heading into year two in Austin, Miller continues to chase what’s been missing from his resume, and the Longhorns seek another deep run in the NCAA Tournament. However, Miller knows he no longer has to fixate on the Final Four every second of the day.

“My response wasn’t a good one,” Miller said. “It was honest, but it really wasn’t a good one because it’s inevitably what can do you in. You’re fixated on the result, something that is a byproduct of your every day (life), your staff, your team, who you are, the perfection of practice and all the different things that are meaningful toward the end result of winning a championship.”
