Marcus Spears Jr., the No. 1 recruit in the class of 2027, has made the decision to reclassify to the class of 2026 and commit to Texas, as he told ESPN on Thursday.

Spears, a 6-foot-9 power forward from Plano, Texas, will forgo his senior year of high school to join the Longhorns this upcoming season.

While Spears was relatively young even in the class of 2027, Adam Finkelstein, 247Sports’ director of scouting, said that the high school phenom’s potential looks promising.

“He’s physically lean and may still be growing, but there’s little doubt that he’ll eventually fill-out his frame and that he’s still relatively young for his grade,” Finkelstein wrote in his scouting report of Spears.

Reclassifying to immediately embrace competing at the college level is no small feat, but Spears used his limited time in high school to prove himself as a top candidate to succeed in his next phase.

He contributed to USA Basketball’s gold medal effort at the FIBA U16 Men’s AmeriCup in 2025, and his athleticism and 7-foot-2 wingspan could make him a major threat against Southeastern Conference opponents.

Spears also won’t have to launch himself into this next chapter alone — his older sister, Cari Spears, is a rising sophomore volleyball player at Texas. Cari was a top 5-ranked prospect in the class of 2025, and she will likely be able to help her brother adapt to life as a college athlete.

Their father, Marcus Spears Sr., had a nine-year career in the NFL, and their mother, Aiysha Smith, played in the WNBA after a successful collegiate basketball career at LSU. Needless to say, Spears Jr. has had several role models to look up to as he has navigated this recruiting experience.

Spears chose Texas over Arizona, Arkansas, LSU and over 20 other Division 1 programs. It will be interesting to see what kind of impact he can have as a Longhorn.

Then-first-year head coach Sean Miller led Texas to the Sweet 16 this past season, and he added several transfers, such as former TCU forward David Punch and former Colorado guard Isaiah Johnson, to the team through the portal following his team’s tournament run. Spears’ commitment means Miller can also add obtaining the reclassified No. 1 2027 recruit to his offseason resume.

Spears is the icing on the cake of an already-strong 2026 class for the Longhorns, which contains five-star combo guard Austin Goosby, four-star forward Bo Ogden, four-star combo guard Joe Sterling, center Coleman Elkins and Lithuanian prospect Mantas Laurenčikas.

Texas men’s basketball will open the season Nov. 26 at the Rady Children’s Invitational, where fans will likely get a closer look at Spears and the rest of the Longhorns’ new roster.
